How we score

The editorial take

Shore Leave refuses to treat tropical drinking as a collection of sweet rum formulas. Coffee Mai Tai sharpens aged Privateer rum with acidified orange; NY Cheesecake Whiskey Sour crosses graham-cracker bourbon and cachaça with a grape-cheese foam; Crossbow pulls Indian single malt, mezcal and manzanilla into the same glass. Even the namesake cocktail grounds its passion fruit in New England rum, Jamaican rum, Madeira and molasses. Twelve originals at $16-$17 and a $24 Mai Tai flight make technical ambition unusually accessible. The spirits book supplies the scholarship behind the color. Rum occupies five of eight pages, with Martinique alone spanning unaged cane spirits, vintage bottlings and a Clément Shore Leave Barrel. Every spirit is listed as a two-ounce pour and can be halved, turning a very large catalog into a workable tasting exercise. Whisky exists as a compact counterpoint, not an equal partner. Shore Leave has announced a January 1, 2027 closing date; until then, it remains a rare bar where a whimsical menu and serious cane-spirit study strengthen rather than undermine each other.

What should I order?
Order Coffee Mai Tai to see acid adjustment and coffee applied to a familiar tropical structure, or NY Cheesecake Whiskey Sour for the stranger bourbon-cachaça construction. Follow with half pours from Martinique: Clément Shore Leave Barrel beside Rhum J.M. 2002 offers a venue-specific bottling against a mature vintage reference point.
Who will enjoy this place?
Rum students can spend an evening moving through regional sections, while cocktail drinkers get enough culinary technique to look beyond escapist presentation. Guests who want tropical flavors without committing to rum also have credible tequila, whisky, gin and arrack routes.
When should I go?
Go before the announced January 1, 2027 closure. The bar currently runs 5:00 PM to midnight Sunday through Wednesday and until 1:00 AM Thursday through Saturday; the outdoor cocktail garden operates Thursday through Saturday from 5:00 to 10:00 PM when weather allows.
What should I expect to spend?
Cocktails cost $16-$17 and the Mai Tai Flight is $24. Many spirits fall in the $12-$22 range, with mature rum reaching $55 for Rhum J.M. 2002 15 Year and Japanese whisky reaching $73. All listed spirits are two-ounce pours and are available as half pours.
What makes the beverage program distinctive?
A modern tropical cocktail laboratory sits on top of a five-page rum map, with local Privateer bottlings, a house Clément barrel and half-pour service tying creative recipes to comparative tasting.

Beverage categories

We only score what a venue sets out to do. Categories a venue doesn't attempt are left unscored rather than penalized.

Cocktails

Inebrious Cocktails score: 95 out of 100

The current list applies culinary and technical ideas to tropical drinking without losing readable structures, and it uses local rum and New England flavors as recurring material rather than decoration.

Menu strengths

  • Distinct constructions spanning clarified citrus, savory infusion and dessert technique
  • Multiple spirit families incorporated without abandoning a rum identity
  • Focused $16-$17 pricing despite complex ingredient lists

Standout selections

  • Coffee Mai Tai
  • NY Cheesecake Whiskey Sour
  • Shore Leave

Pricing: Twelve named cocktails are $16-$17; the three-style Mai Tai Flight is $24

Spirits

Inebrious Spirits score: 96 out of 100

Five pages of geographically ordered rum make cane spirits the intellectual center, while accessible half pours turn breadth into a usable tasting format instead of a display inventory.

Menu strengths

  • Extensive Martinique section covering blanc, aged and vintage rhum
  • Venue-specific Clément barrel alongside substantial Privateer representation
  • Two-ounce and half-pour formats published for the entire spirits list

Standout selections

  • Clément Shore Leave Barrel
  • Rhum J.M. 2002 15 Year
  • Privateer American Single Malt

Pricing: Many two-ounce pours cost $12-$22; mature and rare examples extend to $55 for Rhum J.M. 2002 15 Year and $73 for Nikka Miyagikyo or Yoichi single malt; half pours are available

How it sits with the food

The food menu gives tropical drinks more precision than generic bar snacks would. Dochia & Cabana's celery and grapefruit can track cleanly with nigiri; the molasses and bitters of Shore Leave suit glazed pork ribs; and Coffee Mai Tai's roasted notes can absorb the sweet heat of gochujang wings.
